Florida State University nursing professor appointed to Governor’s Health Care Innovation Council

Florida State University’s College of Nursing Clinical Assistant Professor Rylan Douthett has been appointed to serve on the Florida Health Care Innovation Council.

Douthett is one of only five new appointees selected by Gov. Ron DeSantis to serve on the council whose mission is to explore and promote best practices in health care by evaluating new technologies and strategies that can be scaled to benefit all Floridians.

“I am honored to be a part of the council,” Douthett said. “Finding new pathways to create better patient-centered care for everyone is a top priority. I look forward to working with the council to explore innovative methods that will ultimately improve patient outcomes.”

Dean Jing Wang expressed enthusiasm about Douthett’s appointment.

“The college is boldly rising in leading locally, in the state of Florida, and nationally, in digital health and health care innovation,” she said. “Dr. Douthett’s achievement is a testament to what our faculty can do.”

Wang said Douthett’s time at the college will serve him well in this new role.

“Dr. Douthett has extensive clinical experience and served as a level two lead of our undergraduate program,” she said. “They took an innovative approach to quadruple our graduates over the past three years, which is paramount to addressing the nursing shortage in Florida. Beyond that, he’s also beloved by our students. We are proud to see him in this role.”

Established this spring, the Health Care Innovation Council seeks to harness the expertise of health care professionals, entrepreneurs and technology experts to identify and implement cutting-edge solutions that address current and emerging challenges facing the health care system.

Outside the council, Douthett is a registered nurse, family nurse practitioner and clinical assistant professor. Before joining the FSU College of Nursing, Douthett spent his career working for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. He has extensive experience with psychiatry and medical and surgical nursing.

Douthett has focused on the training and mentoring of newly graduated nurses. His areas of interest include leadership techniques that foster the growth and development of nurses, as well as strategies aimed at retaining nurses in clinical environments. He is a member of the National League for Nursing.
